Conversation Cafe: The Current Complexity of Coming Out
Wednesday July 22, 12:30-2:30pm at Sports Basement in Redwood City
Focused on providing space for youth 13-18 and the adults who support them!
The expectation to come out is ever present for LGBTQ+ youth, but being open about LGBTQ+ identity continues to feel scarier; with increasing political and cultural hostility, voices outside the community speaking over us, and endless laws passed to keep us quiet.
During this event, we will provide space for youth participants to talk about how to safely but proudly communicate about their identities and experiences, with friends, teachers, family, and more! Adult supporters will have space to collaborate on how to protect and uplift youth in their lives, in the face of confusing and frightening rules about disclosure and outing.
We will hold focused and in-depth conversations about:
- concerns we may have about being Out safely
- how to Come Out without having to educate
- how to code-switch depending on the audience
With time to dive deep with different small groups, we will provide a forum to explore opportunities for collaborative solution building and strategizing, with the goal of feeling safer as out and proud members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Wednesday July 22, 12:30-2:30pm at Redwood City Sports Basement (202 Walnut St, Redwood City, CA 94063)
