Bangkok Noi Canal was once a bustling transport route, immortalized in the famous travel poems (Nirat Phra Prathom and Nirat Suphan) by Thailand's legendary royal poet, Sunthorn Phu.
For those looking to make merit, the route features both the very first temple built in the Bangkok metropolitan area and modern temples funded by wealthy merchants. Along the way, you will also find a variety of dining options—ranging from delicious, budget-friendly local food stalls to upscale waterfront restaurants.

## Highlights Along the Route (Bang Yai to Wat Chalo)

### 1. Wat Amphawan

The starting point of your journey offers secure and convenient parking. Built during the reign of King Prasat Thong of Ayutthaya, this temple boasts a peaceful atmosphere. It features century-old rubber trees that serve as a habitat for rare Alexandrine and Rose-ringed parakeets. Registered historical artifacts here include a traditional scripture hall (Hor Trai) and a mandapa (Mondop) housing an ancient Buddha footprint replica.

### 2. Wat Prang Luang

The oldest temple in the Bangkok metropolitan area, built over 600 years ago by King U-Thong, the first king of Ayutthaya. The highlight is an ancient, 20-meter-tall 7-tiered Prang (pagoda) showcasing early Ayutthaya architecture with indented corners (Yao Moom Mai Yee-sip).

### 3. Wat Bot Bon

While the main chapel is simple and lacks murals, it houses a large principal Buddha statue surrounded by 27 smaller Buddha images. The highlight is the solid gold statue of Luang Por Sod, standing at 1.5 times his actual size and weighing 1 ton (1,000 kg). Created by his disciples on February 3, 2015, it commemorates the exact spot where Luang Por Sod attained enlightenment on the full moon night of the 10th lunar month in 1917.

### 4. Bang Khu Wiang Sugarcane Mill

A historic sugarcane mill from the early Rattanakosin era, mentioned in Sunthorn Phu’s poems, proving that Nonthaburi was once a major sugarcane farming region. Though operations have ceased, the historic brick chimney still stands.

### 5. Bang Khu Wiang Waterfront Community

Once a major floating hub where two canals—Khlong Bang Kranok and Khlong Bang Khu Wiang—meet. This waterway connects to Wat Takian (a famous local floating market) and stretches all the way to Khlong Maha Sawat, which leads to the Nakhon Chai Sri (Tha Chin) River in Nakhon Pathom.

### 6. Ko Tong Beef & Pork Noodles

A 5-star local noodle joint set on a small floating raft with limited seating. During lunchtime, lines can be long; customers happily wait on the pier until their turn to step onto the raft and enjoy a delicious bowl.

### 7. Wat Uthayan

An ancient Ayutthaya-era temple popular for making merit by releasing fish. The highlight is Luang Por Khao, an ancient U-Thong-style Buddha image housed in the vihara near the main chapel. Many locals come here to pray for success in business, finances, career, and education. When their wishes are granted, they traditionally return to offer white sugar.

### 8. Thong Yoi Noodles & Café

A waterfront restaurant with a 4.3-star rating, offering an affordable and diverse menu including local noodles, appetizers, traditional Thai desserts, and coffee.

### 9. Khlong Bang Krai

The legendary home of Krai Thong and his father, the protagonists of the famous Thai folklore tale about the hero who defeated the giant crocodile Chalawan in Phichit Province. At the mouth of the canal sits Wat Bang Krai Nok and the Mae Yanang (Mazu) Shrine, highly revered by passing traders. In the past, a real crocodile skull was enshrined here, though it has since disappeared.

### 10. Rim Khlong Story Restaurant

A cozy, 4.8-star eatery that feels like dining at a local friend's house. It serves delicious Thai food, snacks, good coffee, and cakes at moderate prices.

### 11. Three Mango Restaurant

An open-air waterfront Thai restaurant featuring bold, spicy flavors. It holds a 4.3-star rating with mid-range pricing.

### 12. SATJA Restaurant

An upscale, elegant dining spot beautifully decorated with the owner’s collection of antique wood. It serves premium Thai cuisine, coffee, and cakes (rated 4.6 stars). It features an air-conditioned dining room for those wanting to escape the heat, with prices slightly higher than other local spots.

### 13. Wat Tanod

The main chapel features a unique Thai-Chinese architectural blend popular during the reign of King Rama III, characterized by a roof without traditional Thai finials (Chofah and Bairaka). Legend has it that back when the area was still part of Bang Yai district, officials who came to pray here were blessed with career promotions. Business owners also found great wealth, leading locals to name the principal Buddha image "Luang Por Samret" (The Buddha of Success).

### 14. Wat Chalo

Built around 1732 during the late Ayutthaya period under King Borommakot. During its difficult construction, the King dreamed that an elderly Chinese man advised him to build the chapel in the shape of a Chinese junk boat to ward off bad luck. Following the dream, the temple was successfully built and named Wat Chalo. In modern times, a stunning new chapel was constructed, shaped like the majestic Suphannahong Royal Barge.
