What we’re about
Moderately paced day hikes in San Diego County, California. A monthly happening for more than thirty-five years, formerly on the last Saturday of each month. Currently weekday hikes nearly every week, and some cross-posted hikes from other social media groups. Some GPX tracks and other information are posted at http://www.efgh.com/SDDH/
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Oceanside Trail Cabrillo National MonumentPoint Loma Tide Pools, San Diego, CA
We'll start at the Point Loma Tidepools at Cabrillo National Monument and ascend the Oceanside Trail to the Whale Overlook, an ascent of approximately 400 feet. After a visit to the lighthouse, we'll go back down the trail. Those who want additional exercise and recreation can then do an out-and-back hike along the coast.
Dogs are not allowed in Cabrillo Monument.
We last hiked this trail on May 7, 2024. For information and pictures see www.meetup.com/sandiegodayhikers/events/300811794
We'll meet at 9:30 AM near the restrooms at the tidepools (N 32 40.086 W 117 14.652) and step off at 9:45 AM. (Cabrillo monument opens at 9:00 AM.)
SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO. Go west on I-8 to the end of the freeway, then turn left and left again to Nimitz Blvd. Exit at Catalina Blvd. Turn right and follow Catalina Blvd. all the way to the entrance to Cabrillo National Monument. There you must pay an entrance fee (with a credit or debit card) or present an America the Beautiful Pass (or equivalent). The fee or pass will admit you and the other persons in your car. Then proceed a short distance and turn right into Cabrillo Rd. Go down, down, down. The road will level out and curve to the right. The parking area will be on your left. (If you reach the entrance to the sewage treatment plant, you have gone about a mile too far.)
For more information about the entrance fee, see www.nps.gov/cabr/planyourvisit/fees.htm
