Tijuana Estuary
Details
The San Diego Natural History Museum Canyoneers are doing one of their rare weekday hikes at the Tijuana Estuary. We've done this before, a little later in the day and with a different starting point.
Here is the Canyoneers' description of the event:
Tijuana Estuary New Midweek Hike! Thursday, April 28, 8 AM - 10 AM
This is an easy 2 mile walk with an elevation gain/loss of up to 200 feet.
Revel in one of the few remaining salt marshes in Southern California as we enjoy the rich diversity of this estuarine environment. Endangered bird species, including the Clapper Rail, Belding’s Savannah Sparrow, and the California Least Tern may be seen.
(Imperial Beach) From I-5, exit west on Coronado Ave. (Coronado Ave. becomes Imperial Beach Ave.). Turn left (south) on 5th St. to Iris Ave. Park on street. No Facilities. Allow 30 minutes driving time. (GPS N32.569219, W117.122592)
We may also see some big, noisy whirlybirds:

Hiking shoes may be helpful if we encounter some wet spots, but the trails are flat and mostly hard-packed dirt or "decomposed granite". RAIN? Current forecasts (as of 7:30 AM Mon.) are for "showers" on Thursday morning. I will be posting a go/no go message on Wednesday evening. In any event, I will pack an umbrella, just in case.
After the Canyoneers' hike, we may walk up to the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center to see some of their displays. The center opens at 10:00 AM, so don't go there first. The parking lot may be closed at 8:00 AM.
Dogs are not allowed on Canyoneers hikes.
MTS Bus 933/934 connects the Iris Trolley Station to this area. It stops on Imperial Beach Blvd.
