Sunset Trail
Details
It will be hot in the coastal area, the inland valleys and the desert, so we'll head for the mountains. Because it may be windy, we won't be climbing any peaks.
This hike is a seven-mile loop, with just a little climbing along Sunset Trail. We'll pass by two lakes, Water-of-the-Woods (pictured) and Big Laguna Lake. A rest stop is planned at or near Water-of-the-Woods, but it will be too early for lunch. The return along Big Laguna Trail is mostly flat.

Leashed dogs are permitted.
We'll start at the Penny Pines parking area on Sunrise Highway near mile 27.3 (N 32 54.35 W 116 27.45). A parking pass is no longer required to park at Penny Pines.
SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Take I-8 east about 40 miles to the Sunrise Highway exit. Turn north and follow Sunrise Highway (also known as County Highway S1) about 14 miles to the Penny Pines parking area just beyond the fourth cattle guard. Estimated driving time from Downtown San Diego is 1½ hours.

The nominal starting time is 9:00 AM. I will be at the parking area by 8:30, and at 9:15 we will hit the trail. We should return to the parking area between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM.

Cell phone service is spotty and unreliable in the Mount Laguna area, but there is usually service at Penny Pines.
