Bernardo Mountain
Details
We'll hike 3.4 miles from the trailhead to the summit of Bernardo Mountain, which has commanding views in all directions. Along the way, we'll be crossing the celebrated David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and hiking part of the San Dieguito River Park Coast to Crest Trail. We'll have lunch or a snack at the summit and return (another 3.4 miles) by the same route.
Leashed dogs are allowed.
We will meet in the Bernardo Bay Natural Area parking lot on W. Bernardo Dr. (N 33 3.12 W 117 4.60). Parking is free. If this parking lot is full, park in the nearby Rancho Bernardo Community Park and walk to the Bernardo Bay Natural Area. There is a toilet in the parking lot.
We did this hike on January 7, 2017. For information, comments and pictures, see https://www.meetup.com/sandiegodayhikers/events/236622391/
SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Take I-15 north and exit at W Bernardo Dr, Pomerado Rd. Turn left and follow W. Bernardo Dr. up the hill roughly 0.4 mile to the unpaved Bernardo Bay Natural Area parking lot on the right.
The nominal starting time is 9:00 AM. I will be at the parking lot by 8:30, and at 9:15 we will hit the trail. We should return to the parking lot between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM.
Call 858-675-8706 for the latest weather information or check your favorite weather page on the Internet. (I like http://www.weather.com .) Wear good hiking shoes or boots and suitable clothing and take water. A little bit of sun protection may be advisable, although sunshine is less intense this time of year. There are steep parts of the trail where a hiking pole may come in handy. Take a camera if you wish. Call or send E-mail if you have questions.
RAIN? If there is a significant amount of rain the night before the hike, or if rain during the hike seems likely, the hike will be canceled. If there is only a tiny bit of rain, we may still hike. In doubtful cases, I will wait at the trailhead. You must decide whether the weather is tolerable and take appropriate protective clothing. If anyone else shows up, we will hike. Current predictions give very little chance of rain.
