San Dieguito Lagoon
Details
This is hike number 5 in Jerry Schad's book 50 Best Short Hikes San Diego, an easy 2.8-mile out-and-back hike along the north side of San Dieguito Lagoon. We'll follow the Lagoon Trail, which is part of the Coast to Crest Trail. It passes under I-5!
We'll actually go a little farther than that. We'll continue on the Riverpath to the remains of the Old Grand Avenue Bridge. This will add another 0.6 miles to the hike.
Yes, this is an easy coastal hike that we do to escape the heat. Del Mar is often the coolest place in the county.
We did this hike last summer (and the summers before that). For details, including photographs, see https://www.meetup.com/sandiegodayhikers/events/263571282/
For those who need some additional exercise, there will be a second optional out-and-back hike from the same trailhead along the newer, and apparently less scenic, part of the trail to the east, as far as we can go. This part of the Coast to Crest Trail is newer. It wasn't open when Schad wrote his book.
We'll meet at 9:00 AM and step off at 9:15 AM from the trailhead at the south end of San Andres Dr. (N 32 58.710 W 117 14.840).
SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Go north on I-5 and exit at Via De La Valle (exit 36). Go east about 0.13 miles past a shopping center and turn right into San Andres Dr. Go all the way to the end of the street. The area is served by NCTD Breeze bus 308.
Of course, face masks and "social distancing" are required, as on previous hikes. Leashed dogs are allowed
Hiking shoes are not required, because the trail is not rocky. The first part of the hike is almost completely flat. The second part has small hills. Take water, and use sun protection.
There is a rest room on the trail, but it is not at our starting point. Arrive early if you want to use the rest room before beginning the hike.
