5 miles, 600ft ascent.

Hike specific info:
Trail is wet, there will be mud, snow (<1") and some icy patches. Hiking poles essential. Start elevation 5,400ft. Gloves and warm headwear recommended. Take extra shoes for drive home. Little cell coverage.
I-8 has single lane traffic due to road repairs for several miles.
There are no rest rooms at Penny Pines, but there are some along Sunrise Highway. The closest are at the Visitor Center at Los Huecos Rd.

A pretty hike with great views, passing the flat and following some fire roads.
Whilst leashed dogs are allowed, due to the generally wet conditions, I don't recommend this hike for our 4 legged friends.

Meet at 9:30 AM at the Penny Pines parking area on Sunrise Highway near mile 27.3
Google maps: Penny Pines trailhead.
(N 32 54.35 W 116 27.45).

SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Take I-8 east about 40 miles to the Sunrise Highway exit. Turn left (north) and follow Sunrise Highway (also known as County Highway S1) about 14 miles to the Penny Pines parking area just beyond the fourth cattle guard.

We can carpool from Los Coches Park & Ride. 13702 Camino Canada, El Cajon. I will leave there at 8:30am.

Wear good hiking shoes and dress in layers. Take water, sunscreen, a hat and a snack.
