Overview: A moderate, urban walk, about 2/3 sidewalk, 1/3 dirt trail. Distance 7 miles. Duration 2:45. Total elev gain 500 ft. This is NOT a casual stroll. We'll be walking briskly, about 3 mph. Route map is below in Photos section.
Route: We'll start at the Grape Street Dog Park, and head north thru Switzer Canyon. We'll crouch down and walk through the 300' long Switzer Canyon tunnel. After exiting the canyon, we'll walk by St. Augustine High School & its PSA crash memorial. Then through Burlingame, where we'll admire its pink sidewalks and old houses. South through Juniper Canyon, then Cedar Ridge Park canyon, then 34th St canyon, and finally 32nd St. canyon. Finally, we'll walk north on Fern St, the heart of South Park, home of cafes like Matteo, Big Kitchen, and Seven Seas Roasting. We'll end the walk at Fern & Juniper, where people can stop in a coffee shop, or walk back to their cars (a few blocks away).
Hazards: We'll be going through some canyons, so you may want to wear long pants to minimize scratches. We have to go up and down a few short, steep dirt trails, so balance & agility are required. We'll be going thru the Switzer Canyon tunnel, which is a 300 ft long 5' x 5' concrete tunnel.
