Silver Strand & Wildlife Refuge beach walk
Details
Overview: A moderate walk, about 7.6 miles, flat. Duration nearly 3 hours. Half on beach sand, half on paved walking path. This is not a casual stroll!! We'll be walking briskly (about 3mph). The walk is longer than it looks on the map.
Route: Start in Imperial Beach at the "Spirit of Imperial Beach" statue, and walk three miles north on the Silver Strand State Beach, passing by a brand-new Navy SEAL training campus. Walk through interesting sand dunes, then cross under Silver Strand Blvd to Coronado Cays Park. Then southbound on Bayshore bikeway paved path to the National Wildlife Refuge at southern end of San Diego Bay. From there, if skies are clear, we'll be able to see all the way to Coronado Bridge. Head west on city streets back to starting point. A map of the route is in the photos below.
Start time: Meet at 8:30am, start walking promptly at 8:35am.
Where: At the far west end of Palm Ave, at the "Spirit of Imperial Beach" statue
Hazards: We'll be walking on the beach so wear shoes that can tolerate sand and water. Near the end of our walk, we'll be walking near a busy road (Silver Strand Blvd) which can be a bit noisy.
Bring a positive attitude! This is a friendly, welcoming event. No negative energy allowed :-)
