Nancy Lemke is a nationally exhibited fiber artist and a growing painter. But the sketches in her new show, My Complicated but Beautiful Life, come from a more intimate, unfiltered space.
“Every Tuesday morning for years I have sat down with other attendees of the Women’s Expression Session at Expressive Arts @ 32nd & Thorn and made art. Those Tuesday mornings are not times to work on my skill or judge my thoughts. They are just times to be me.
Usually, an image pops into my brain from the week or something long ago, and I make a simple colored pencil drawing of it. But if no image appears, I scribble and look for pictures in the tangled lines. I try to be honest, hopeful, and often whimsical, although outrage or pain or sadness can creep in. The sketches in My Complicated but Beautiful Life are what have emerged from those tangled, honest mornings.”
