Moonlight Hike on Mission Peak

Details

Leader: Hike Leader is William Yragui, wyragui@missionpeakconservancy.net, 650-642-5150 cell

Synopsis: Moonlight hike from Ohlone College to Mission Peak summit via the Peak Trail. Headlamps or flashlights are recommended for short sections of the trail but the objective is to enjoy hiking in the moonlight with no or very limited artificial illumination. Level: Moderate ++ (2C) Not a beginner’s hike as this hike will be difficult for new hikers, hikers out of shape, or those with phobias about hiking at night. We will stop on a regular basis but must complete the hike by 10 p.m. when the park closes. This means we have 3.5 hours to complete a 7mile hike with significant elevation gain. If you are unsure about your physical condition, please hike another day where the time required to complete the hike is not an issue. Exiting the park after 10 p.m can lead to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing by EBRPD.

Estimated Distance of Hike: Seven + miles

Gross Elevation Gain: 2100 ft.

Parking Cost: $ 4.00 parking fee if you park in the Ohlone College multistory garage. Free if it is a school holiday or if you park on Mission Blvd. and walk onto campus. If you park off-campus, walk up Pine Street until you see the multi-story garage on your left. It is a building with multi-floors and looks like a parking garage. We meet across the street at the trailhead under the large electric power towers.

Bring: Two liters of water, lamp, snack, face mask, hand sanitizer, layered clothing, and enthusiasm. Recommend well-fitting boots for traction and ankle support. Hiking poles are helpful, especially when going downhill.

Covid Parameters: Bring a mask as there will be other hikers on the trail so courtesy in passing with a mask on is appreciated. Assume everyone hiking has Covid so practice social distancing, limit face-to-face interaction and use hand sanitizer as needed.

Cancellation: Activity is held in rain or cloudy weather, but may be altered due to snow or hail. Hike leader is not responsible should the moon be obscured by clouds or choose to hide.

Carpool: We recommend that you not carpool unless you are family. Covid is real.

Sierra Club - Signature of a Liability Waiver is required for participation in Sierra Club outings. If you need an advance copy of the waiver, email wyragui@missionpeakconservancy.net.

Meet: We will meet across the street from the parking garage at the Peak Trail entrance which is under multiple, large, power towers. The trailhead is located on the right hand side of Pine Street above the tennis courts, across from the multi-story Ohlone College Pine Street parking structure located at the end of Pine Street.

Directions: Ohlone College is located in the City of Fremont on Mission Blvd. Use the Pine Street entrance to minimize drive time.
