Featuring a presentation by Curt Kolovson W6RQ on Skywarn. Skywarn was created to help the National Weather Service with trained weather “spotters” throughout the country who could report notable and/or severe weather conditions to local NWS WFOs. Over the years, the program has grown and there are currently many Skywarn programs across the country, particularly in areas where there is a good deal of severe weather -- mainly the Midwest (especially “Tornado Alley”), the Southeast, the Northeast, and the Mountain West, and to some extent the Pacific Northwest. And despite California's generally mild weather, there are still extremes of rain, wind, and cold, even tornados, with the Bay Area's famous microclimates making detailed timely observations difficult to do from the central weather office. Skywarn originally relied heavily on amateur radio operators, and despite the ubiquity of cell phones and the internet today, ham radio still has a role to play.

Curt will discuss the Skywarn history and current activity, SF Bay Area Skywarn, becoming a Weather Spotter with the National Weather Service, and amateur radio's role in Skywarn.

The video conferencing session and in-person location opens at 7:00 pm, and the meeting officially starts at 7:15 pm.

Video Conferencing: The Zoom link will show on the event page after you register for this event.

In-person location: Congregational Church of San Mateo, Betsy Woodward Christian Education building, in the Will Bullis Community Room, 2nd Floor. The church is graciously allowing SMRC to use their meeting room free of charge.

The church address is 225 Tilton Ave, San Mateo, CA. However, on Google Maps, use 220 Catalpa St, San Mateo, CA 94401 to navigate to the parking lot from Catalpa Street. Access to the building entrance is from the back of the building -NOT the main entrance from the street. Finding the building entrance on the church campus may be confusing - watch this video for details: http://w6uq.org/directions

If the parking lot is full, find street parking. For individuals who need it,
there is a limited number of accessible parking in the parking lot.
