SBHX Tech Talk June 2024: Electrical Capacitance Tomography Corrosion Detection

Details

Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) offers a non-invasive, fast, and simple detection method for sensing metal corrosion on flat surfaces. As part of a broader investigation into non-destructive corrosion detection, this talk goes into detail on how ECT could be used to detect surface corrosion in a Naval ship environment, as part of the UCSB Pipelines program. This unfortunately involves a lot of linear algebra but there are a lot of nice visuals throughout the presentation which can appeal to a wider audience. The talk delves into the theory behind ECT and how I used the Wolfram Mathematica programming language to solve the forward and inverse problems associated with it. Listeners can gain a greater appreciation for non-destructive sensing methods and the novel applications it unlocks.
