What we’re about
Urban Works is a registered 501c3 community that promotes play as an inclusive and enjoyable means through which to cultivate a more cohesive and mutually complementary community. The idea is really quite simple, when you play together you grow together, and thus superficial differences such as one's physical or developmental ability level, economic situation, sexual or social identity, etc become obsolete allowing a space where acceptance and equality prosper.
It is as Plato once wrote, "Man grows more through an hour of play than a lifetime of conversation," thus we hope to heal, unite, and empower our community through enjoyable and engaging activities such as community cruises on our wheelchair accessible catamaran, adaptive yoga; dance; and art classes, hiking; skating and swimming, etc.We try to keep our activities both physically and financially accessible well as inclusive and affirming to all. So if you have something you'd like to lead (anything from board games to backpacking) then let us know because this is a community-based initiative that only works if YOU step up to the plate.
Intrigued?
Check us out at https://www.urbanworks-sc.org and note that we invite all to engage as equals in recognition that everyone comes with a unique wisdom and talents to share. That said there is no distinction between volunteer, leader, and/or participant in our programming because we are all equal and essential in exemplifying our belief of "Unity through diversity." So please check us out and let us know if you would like to help host or participate in an activity or maybe there is something that you would like to see happening.
In closing as an example of how we use recreation to overcome social barriers and stigmatization, here's a quick video documenting a recreational retreat we hosted early on to Lake Tahoe that introduced marginalized members of the homeless and disabled communities through a week's worth of shared intentional activities.
