I have hardly explored the beautiful forested area on the north side of Cerro San Luis Obispo, even though I have hiked quite a few times to the summit for sun setting.

With the recent heavy rains, I am curious to discover what species of the fungi kingdom emerge from the hidden and mysterious underground mycelia network. Many of these mycorrhizal fungi species, such as amanita ocreata, amanita smithiana, boletus barrowsii and cantharellus californicus, form symbiotic partnerships with oak species in this area, such as coast live oak.

Fungi are a unique kingdom of organisms distinct from plants and animals, playing a critical role in Earth’s ecosystems. They decompose organic materials, recycle nutrients, and form symbiotic relationships with plants through mycorrhizal networks that enhance water and mineral absorption. Without fungi, ecosystems would be jeopardized under accumulated waste.

I am combining mycology field discovery with a few hours of exploring and working out in beautiful nature. I expect this hike to be fun and exciting.
