Let's Talk about Artificial Intelligence!

When we need to change a presentation date, we sometimes have an open discussion of a philosophical topic most of us are fairly well acquainted with. Since Ayala's presentation on Fascism had to be postponed until July, we propose discussing a current hot topic, AI. Here are links to some suggested readings:

AI is a variety of hyper-object in Timothy Morton's sense. Very difficult to grapple with in its endless aspectsl But a summary of the situation is that we have encountered an alien mind, not from outer space, but of our own devising. The modern variant of AI, based on transformers, involves stacks of abstractions more than one hundred deep. The activities above the base layer, no one, despite valiant efforts, fully understands. This alien intelligence fails at problems that are simple for humans, while performing at far greater than human capabilities at others. A very difficult situation for us humans, which will be addressed as usual by capitalist aims. Discuss! I recommend this interview with Demis Hassabis for perspective.
