"The unique holistic perspective of the software tester".

As testers we often have a unique position within a development organization as we regularly interact with different stakeholders and take on the role of different end users.

We therefore have a possibility to take a holistic approach and scrutinize our way of working. This is especially important when working on a large project where there might be a highly detailed way of working and high requirements for documentation.

This talk will focus on the importance of not letting details and processes get in the way of the main objective - to build a working, functional and safe product.

Code reviews for automated test cases and GUI testing

Context:
Software development and testing are highly collaborative tasks that require technical and domain-specific knowledge.
Tools and processes facilitate collaboration on source code and low-level test code.

Problem:
However, for system-level tests, like GUI-based testing, effective collaboration presents inherent difficulties due to the high level of abstraction and the involvement of the whole system's behavior.
During code reviews, a common collaborative practice, the missing context of the GUI, and a clear relationship between test cases and GUI states make it harder to understand changes and, thus, effectively collaborate on them through reviews.

Proposed Solution:
To improve comprehension and, thus, the code review process, we propose additional visualization of needed information relevant to GUI-based tests.
For example, visualizing the relationship between test code and elements of the GUI or a hierarchical overview of tested/untested screens of the system's GUI.

Better comprehension of GUI-based testing changes could be an enabling factor for effective collaboration of GUI-based tests.
