Our upcoming June meetup combines two events: June 21st is midsummer, said to be the most magical night of the year when the fae folk walk among us, and June is also pride 🏳️🌈 month, a long tradition of protest and inclusivity dating back to the stonewall riots. In honour of both of these, we’ll be following a scavenger hunt trail around Hyde Park themed around the queer history of fairytales.
Unicorns, mermaids and fairies, oh my!
Queerness has always been an inherent part of folklore because queer folk have always existed in every community. They have at times been pushed into the background, but they have never ceased to exist and have always been creators and stars of artistic and folkloric expression whether they’ve been acknowledged or not. So let’s explore the many ways that the LGBTQ+ community shows up in fairytales, challenge the narratives that have forced them into hiding, and celebrate the resilience of the queer spirit.
Expect tricky puzzles, a fascinating decoding of well known characters and stories, and a (hopefully sunny) walk around one of London’s best loved parks.
All are welcome regardless of orientation. We’ll have a gay old time!
Bring sunscreen and snacks or money for snacks.
