Web Accessibility in 2019, How to Test and Find Things
Details
'Disability is an opportunity for innovation'.
Contrast this with the perspective many of us take building apps: web accessibility is treated as an afterthought, a confusing collection of rules that the team might look into for version two. If that sounds familiar (and you’re a developer, designer or product/project manager), this talk is for you.
Accessibility and ADA compliance has become a very hot topic recently due to many software companies being sued by 'serial filers' for violations. In many countries, such as Canada, web accessibility is mandatory by law. In the US everyone is confused since ADA is mandatory by Federal law and that law is not yet very clear.
In this talk, I will share with you my own journey figuring out web accessibility. About 2 years ago, I went from zero to becoming a head of our accessibility efforts in my department. It was not easy and I had no one to ask, except the Internet. I will show you my favorite resources and how to test things properly to avoid problems.
Agenda:
- Accessibility basics
- How to test things
- Auto testing tools
- Where to look for answers
