We are a bunch of software developers interested in discovering Scala, learning about new techniques and frameworks and meeting other Scala developers in the Vienna area. Our aim is to meet regularly in 4 week cycles and share knowledge and experiences about the Scala programming language and its ecosystem.

We will address the misconception that actors are about concurrency, why you would write your own framework and the challenges of maintaining code over a decade. Leucine answers to these issues. It is a dependency-free typed actor framework that runs on the JVM, JS and Native alike. It gives you the tools needed for stashing, timing, back pressure, monitoring and more while at the same being so simple that you can modify and extend it yourself.About the Speaker
Ruud was born in 1964 and started programming at the age of 11 (HP25). With a great love for electronics he build his first 6502 based computer at 15. Subsequently he completed his Master in Electrical Engineering in 1988 and in Applied Physics in 1989 both in Delft. The PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics came in 1993 from the RWTH Aachen. After one postdoc at the University of Amsterdam he started the consultancy company Beta Research BV in 1995 in the Netherlands and a comparable company Beta Research GmbH in 2023 in Vienna. During his life he programmed in different languages like Basic, Pascal, C, C++, Java, Dart, JavaScript. The last 10 years he works mainly with C for embedded software and with Scala for anything else.Join us to explore all this, enjoy a life coding session and solve some puzzles together.
How to raise a cat: Introducing Scala through the typelevel ecosystem
This talk is going to demystify typed functional programming by explaining some of Scala’s syntax and cool features, and will try to convince us why the philosophies of the FP world make us become better programmers.About the Speaker:
Domonkos Lezsák is a fan of formal methods, a believer of the Elm language and sometimes uses tools for purposes they are not intended to.
During his academic career in mathematical modeling he learned to write in Agda instead of in hieroglyphics, but still assumes that Actors are about concurrency.
He is now helping Ericsson Hungary as a Software Architect, specializing in telecommunications infrastructure, high-volume data pipelines, process automation and Business Process Management.
He identifies as a language-agnostic hacker with affinity ranging from microelectronics through low level programming to no-code business process specifications.5 attendees
