Hey Scala Devs,
So the next Scala Manchester finally has a date, sorry for the delay. We have secured a regular Mad Lab slot for the last Monday of the month! However the last Monday of May just so happens to be a bank holiday, sigh!
So we have the venue for Tues 26th May from 7pm - 9pm.
On the plus side we are going to have a great line up, we have some great talks lined up. We are going to go for a couple of lightening talks then one main talk from Jon, who just so happens to be in the North West that week! Great timing.
Lightening Talks:
Slot 1 - Alex Lashford - Learning resources & Shaping the Meetup
A brief description of the learning resources I find useful and and some discussion to gauge the collective level of the group. So we can plan the next talk. :-)
Slot 2 - Andrew Sim - Introduction to the Scala Type System.
Scala is a statically, strongly typed language with built in type inference. Its type system allows us to do some pretty interesting stuff like Ad-Hoc Polymorphism, defining recursive type, programming at the type level and so on. The things that we will cover in this talk include but not limited to some basic types in Scala, the concept of variance and bounds and also Ad-Hoc polymorphism.
Main Talk:
Slot 3 - Jon Pretty - Rapture: The Art of the One-Liner
Rapture is a collection of modules (JSON, cryptography, I/O, internationalization and others) providing elegant APIs for many everyday tasks, with a strong focus on type safety and intuitive, boilerplate-free code. Rapture takes advantage of advanced Scala features like type classes, macros and dependent types to provide type-driven APIs, but works hard not to expose this complexity to its end-users, instead promoting correctness and readability in code. The format of the talk will be a diverse journey through many of Rapture's features, exploring about fifty one-line code samples, each one useful and clear, and may teach you a bit about Scala along the way.
NEW: Cake Solutions (http://cakesolutions.net) are providing Beer and Pizza! Big thanks to Guy.
I look forward to seeing you all on the 26th.
Cheers
Alex.
