Talk #1: Thomas Alexandre
Topic: Full-stack Scala
Title: Scala in the Frontend
Abstract: Recently celebrating 20 years, Scala is mostly known for powering the backend of many companies in need of scalable, robust and maintainable software on top of the JVM.
However, Scala is also a great language for frontend development to write type-safe, reactive and composable web applications.
After covering the basics of getting started with Scala.js, we will dive into the ecosystem and see how to build full-stack applications with additional libraries eg Laminar or Tyrian, as well as explore alternatives for future web and mobile development.
Thomas Alexandre is a senior software developer in the Courier Group at Wolt. Initially a Java developer, he has been working with Scala for the past 15 years, building cloud-based micro-services in various domains such as TV-streaming (Magine, Discovery Networks), finance (Klarna, IBM Cognos) and logistics (Scania, Wolt).
Author of the book "Scala for Java developers" (Packt Publishing, 2014), he is passionate about programming languages that make code easier to write and maintain (both in backend and frontend), and has been focused on functional programming and effect systems (cats, zio) for the past 10 years.
Thomas holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Lille, France, and has spent 2 years as postdoc with Carnegie Mellon University in the fields of Security and E-Commerce.
Talk #2: Philipp Haller
Topic: Towards safer lightweight concurrency in Scala
Philipp Haller is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is co-author of Scala's async/await extension for asynchronous programming, and one of the lead designers of Scala's futures library. Main author of the book "Actors in Scala," he created Scala's first widely-used actor library.
Philipp was part of the team that received the ACM SIGPLAN Programming Languages Software Award in 2019 for the development of the Scala programming language. He is also one of the founders of the Software Development Academy at KTH, a 3-month accelerated training program in software development, which was selected finalist for the Tech Skills and Talent Award of Tech Awards Sweden in 2022.
Philipp received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from EPFL, Switzerland, in 2010 and a Diplom-Informatiker degree from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, in 2006.
