Presentation by Daniel R. Jeske, UC Riverside on “Discussion of the March 2019 Special Issue of
The American Statistician on Alternatives to P < .05”
Abstract: A special issue of The American Statistician, with the same title as my talk, was published in March 2019. The special issue contains 43 papers that discuss and propose alternative inference procedures that could either enhance or replace the use of "bright line" thresholds such as P<.05. In this talk, I will discuss the history and motivation that led to the special issue, and provide an overview of what I found to be some
of the most interesting papers in the issue. If you are new to this debate, or want to get caught up on the
recent developments, you won't want to miss this accessible presentation!
11:00am - 11:30am:
Presentation by Douglas Montgomery, Arizona State University (ASU) on “Providing comment on Dr. Jeske’s presentation and talk about Ph.D. program at ASU”
11:30pm-12:30pm:
Lunch and presentation by Dr. Montgomery on “How Do You Make a Small Fortune in Wine…?”
Abstract: This presentation takes you through the author’s’encounters with wine and wine-making, starting
with a group of friends who became business partners in the ownership of a small vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Their passion in wine had led them to this venture realizing that they actually knew very little about making wine. However, some of the partners knew about the power of designed ex-
periments so over a series of seasons they developed a process for making world-class Pinot Noirs using fractional factorial designs. Today the winery produces several varieties of wine in addition to Pinot Noir
with annual production exceeding 22,000 cases.
