One of the first foreign-language movies to become a box-office phenomenon in the U.S., changing the way mainstream audiences looked at this genre, is being screened as a major engagement at the Siskel Film Center.

Upon its release in 1966, Claude Lelouch’s swooning romance A Man and a Woman captured the hearts of Americans and became a cultural touchstone. The story starts with widower Jean-Louis and widow Anne meeting at their children’s school, and a complicated love affair begins.

The movie's stars are Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant.

Shot in black and white and color, and featuring an iconic musical theme by Francis Lai, A Man and a Woman won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, then the Academy Award for Best International Film.

Aimée and Lelouch scored Oscar nominations.
