Shad Thames and Southwark Park, 3.5 miles
Details
We will meet outside the Tower Hill tube station, to your right as you exit. Please arrive at 11:50 for registration and for 12:00 prompt departure.
-
We will then make our way to pass by the Tower of London, which was built in 1080s and enlarged by successive monarchs. It has served as a royal palace, a fortress and a prison.
-
Next we will cross the Tower Hill Bridge (completed in 1894) to reach the Shad Thames. This area was once known as the Larder of London, where spices, tea and coffee were imported. The surviving iron wrought-bridges are a reminder of a frenetic industrial scene of loading, hauling and moving goods.
-
We will join the riverfront via street called Maggie Blake's Cause. It's named after a local activist who in 1990s campaigned to save the riverfront views as a public right of way.
-
We will carry on to see the Salter family statues. Dr Alfred Salter opened a medical practice to help working-class residents, offering free services to people who couldn't afford them. In 1900 he married Ada, and they strived to improve the lives of Bermondsey residents.
-
We will then carry on to Southwark Park to see the Albin Memorial and Ada Salter Gardens. We will then carry on via Shad Thames to arrive at London Bridge Station where the walk ends.
Optional lunch/drinks at the end of the walk.
What to bring:
Comfortable footwear
Water
Photo-taking gadgets and chargers
An umbrella just in case (it's London after all)
The walk is free for members who have subscribed for an annual membership. For other members the fee is £5 cash/card on arrival to contribute towards the organiser's meetup fees and costs.
The annual pass option is £15 payable by cash or card on the day. This will provide access to at least 40 walks per year (members are welcome to bring a guest to each event).
All walks are free for the NHS staff (also welcome to bring a guest).
'No Show' Policy: If the member replied 'yes' but did not attend the event, did not update the RSVP and did not inform the organiser on 3 occasions – this triggers an automatic removal from the group. That's once for events with a waiting list.
