About us
For my master's thesis, I am exploring how neurotechnological implants are portrayed in contemporary science fiction and what these narratives reveal about potential future societies.
I am organizing a small, interactive focus group (1.5-2 hours) in which we will explore these ideas through a combination of reading, discussion and short guided exercises. No prior reading is required but welcomed, all materials will be provided during the session.
We will work with excerpts from the following novels:
• The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami
• The Insecure Mind of Sergei Kraev by Eric Silberstein
• Void Star by Zachary Mason
At the start of the session, you will be introduced to a short fictional scenario inspired by these novels, in which neurotechnological implants play a central role in everyday life. From there, we will reflect on the broader implications such technologies might present from social, political and ethical perspectives.
During the session, you will be invited to read and discuss the selected passages, reflect on themes such as privacy, control, surveillance, identity, and respond to hypothetical situations and future scenarios.
This focus group forms part of my research, but it will take the form of an open and informal discussion where different interpretations and perspectives are very welcome. Anyone interested in reading, critical discussion, or questions around technology and society is welcome to join!
Hope to see you there!
