THE MISWIRED BRAIN
- How altered brain development leads to mental disorders
Presented by : Kevin J. Mitchell, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Neurogenetics
Trinity College Dublin, Ireland
-
How does the brain wire itself up during development?
-
How can the end result vary in different people?
-
What happens when it goes wrong?
"For the first time in history, we have an opportunity to make major breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of mental illness. Until recently, scientists have had virtually no knowledge about the root causes of disorders of the brain including autism, epilepsy and schizophrenia; consequently there have been few advances in treatments for over half a century. Powerful new insights arising from genetic studies are revolutionizing the approach to the problem.
Join us for an engaging discussion on how miswiring at crucial points in brain development can result in disorders such as autism, schizophrenia and epilepsy.
Dr. Kevin Mitchell studies the genetics of brain wiring. Specifically, his research is aimed at understanding how the brain is wired during development. Dr. Mitchell is interested in particular in the genes that control this process and their possible involvement in psychiatric and neurological disorders. He uses molecular genetic approaches to identify such genes and investigate their developmental functions, as well as the effects on anatomy, physiology and behavior when they are mutated.
Dr. Mitchell’s blog, Wiring the Brain, can be found at www.wiringthebrain.com.
