Book: Quantum Theory: A Very Short Introduction by John
Polkinghorne and/or Entanglement: The Unlikely Story of How Scientists, Mathematicians, and Philosophers Proved Einstein's Spookiest Theory by Amir D. Aczel
Quantum mechanics was conceptually essential for technology that defeated Hitler in World War II, and is now the foundation of about 30% of the U.S. economy, including your smart phone. But the weird realm of probability waves, entanglement, and qubits leaves most of us baffled. Whether you are a philosopher, scientist, artist, or other kind of humanist, addressing this subject will expand your knowledge of the world, and of how our human brains strive to understand, symbolize, and communicate such counterintuitive knowledge.
About the club:
In our increasingly complex world, knowing a little about a lot not only grounds our own interests within all spheres of knowledge, but helps us foster the holistic thinking that will illuminate our questions with innovative and unique points of view. At the SciArt Book Club, we aim to cover some of today's most scientifically and socially vital topics through a variety of texts (often selected from Oxford's Very Short Introduction series).
The SciArt Book Club generally meets every 6 weeks on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm. Each session is hosted by Paul Poggiali and features other club members as co-facilitators. In contrast to a traditional book club, preparation for our sessions does not require substantial reading - all levels of preparedness are welcome. Facilitators will provide a brief discussion guide prior to the meeting – email ppoggiali21@gmail.com to receive the next meeting’s guide.
