The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi - Book discussion

Details

Hi all!! Our next book is the biopunk sci-fi The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula for Best Novel.

From Wikipedia - "Windup Girl is set in 23rd-century Thailand. Biotechnology is dominant and megacorporations control food production through "genehacked" seeds, and use bioterrorism, private armies and economic hitmen to create markets for their products. Frequent catastrophes caused by genetically modified crops and mutant pests ravage entire populations. The natural genetic seed stock of the world's plants has been almost completely supplanted by those that are genetically engineered to be sterile, forcing farmers to buy new seeds from the calorie companies every season. Thailand is an exception."

I'm going on vacation at the end of the month so I had to move this up a bit (we have three weeks to read this book instead of the usual four). The book is 250 pages, estimated to take 8-10 hours to read total.

So excited for this one! I think it will be an interesting discussion. Looking forward to seeing everyone & as always new sci-fi friends are always welcome to join!

Best, Amber
