Arrival (Story of Your Life) ๐ธ by Ted Chiang - Movie & Book discussion
Details
SciFi movie & book lovers unite! Let's get together at Barnes and Noble to discuss Arrival (directed by Denis Villeneuve), based on the 1998 Nebula-winning short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang.
Arrival explores communication with extraterrestrial intelligence. The main character is a linguist, Louise Banks. "Addressed to her daughter, the story alternates between recounting the past: the coming of aliens to Earth and the deciphering of their language; and remembering the future". The movie received eight nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, and won Best Sound Editing.
Arrival (Story of Your Life) is about 45 pages long, and should be a quick 1-2 hour read. Feel free to read the story, watch the movie, or both!
I'm thinking we spend the first half of the meeting on the book, and the second half contrasting it with the movie. Super excited to hear everyone's perspective. New SciFi friends are always welcome, and feel free to reach out to me beforehand if you have any questions!
