For our next book we are leaving the UK and travelling to eastern Europe. Roadside Picnic by Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky (1972, Soviet Union) is about the aftermath of a brief alien visitation that left behind dangerous, mysterious "Zones" filled with strange artifacts. The story follows "stalkers" like Redrick Schuhart, who illegally enter these hazardous areas to retrieve and sell alien objects on a black market, exploring themes of human nature, capitalism, and the incomprehensible nature of the alien "picnic". It inspired Stalker (1979), Andrei Tarkovsky’s visually stunning film that won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

I will update this soon with a location.
