Screenwriting Tribe 3P.M. - 5:ish P.M. Aug 3 Sunset Strip

Details
PARTICIPANTS PLEASE READ:
We are re-starting / re-establishing the Tribe workshop after a one-year hiatus. We have a new location, in WeHo. The Badger and Jam standup comic rehearsal space: 8265 Sunset. Up one flight of stairs, in back.
Now $8 per person collected at start of workshop. We formerly had people pay through MeetUp, but MeetU has added an additional fee. The goal is to covert expenses of having the workshop. It's not a money-making venture.
Tribe started in 2016, and went until 2018. Those who previously attended know how it goes. Here are the details:
β’ Tribe is writers and actors helping writers to polish their screenplays. Some who show up might be non-writer actors there to help read characters, and practice their cold-reading skills.
β’ A diversity of ages, life experiences, and voices, are helpful to have in the workshop. (No children. 16, and older, please.)
π If you RSVP, but can't attend:
π Cancel your RSVP ASAP. You do so on this MeetUp page. It prevents writers from depending on you being there to read roles.
ππ½ To sign up for having your script pages read by and get feedback from the group:
ππ½ First RSVP. Don't sign up for pages without an RSVP.
ππ» If you signed up for pages and changed your mind:
ππ» DELETE your pages comment AND leave a post "Canceling pages."
ππ» Give another writer time to prepare pages.
β’ Canceling pages does not cancel your RSVP.
If you ARE NOT going to attend, please: ALSO cancel your RSVP so writers aren't depending on you to read roles.
β’ BEFORE you sign up for pages: A, B, C, D...
A β’ (This doesn't apply for now, as we are re-starting / re-establishing the workshop.) Participate in the workshop at least 3 times.
B β’ (This also doesn't apply for now, as we re-establish the workshop. But do order the books so we can get everyone to be as helpful to each other as possible. The workshop is all about writers helping writers.) OWN and study the three books:
- Screenplay Repair Manual
- The Screenwriter's Bible
- Dr. Format Tells All
(This doesn't apply for now, either. Yet.) ππ½**If you don't own the books, don't sign up for pages.**ππΌ
β’ It's helpful to ALSO read a few books about TV writing, so you get various opinions.
β’ If you are writing multi-cam sitcoms, learn the formatting for a multi-cam, which is not the same as film and other TV scripts.
C β’ Have an RSVP.
D β’ Be one of the first 4 to sign up for pages.
β’ We workshop features, short films, episodic, anthology, limited/mini series, serial series, single cam sitcom, and now also multi-cam sitcom scripts.
(We previously didn't workshop multi-cam scripts. But writers may want to consider that multi-cam sitcoms are not as popular as they were. This makes getting them made even less likely - unless you are an established sit-com writer, or an established stand-up comic.)
β’ WE DO NOT WORKSHOP SOAP OPERA, MUSICAL, NC-17, OR X SCRIPTS. (Yes, someone once brought in an X script and we had to stop reading it. He β thankfully β didn't return.)
β’ Format scripts in 12 point Courier font.
β’ Take one script through the workshop at a time, from the first page to "The End."
β’ Own the material in the script. No plagiarism. It has to be something you can copyright. (No lyrics, poetry, book excerpts, life stories, or other material to which you do not own the rights.)
β’ The workshop is as good as the participants make it.
The workshop is $8 per person. We are trying to keep the cost as low-cost as possible. There are a variety of expenses we need to cover to keep the workshop going.
ππ½Aim to write engaging scripts with broad market, investor & distributor appeal, and that advance the careers of actors, directors & producers.ππΌ
To sign up for pages: 1, 2, 3.
- RSVP.
- After RSVPing, type βpagesβ in the comments section.
Bring up to 12 pages of your script. Or, if it is a multi-cam sitcom, bring the entire episode. The workshop is meant to workshop your script 12 pages at a time.
Bring enough copies of your script pages for everyone who has RSVPd. (Google: Staples copy center location.) Print double sided copies to save $ and paper.
We write feedback on the pages, and also give verbal feedback.
Also, helpful to email the pages as a PDF to John = FilmMimic at AOL.
Be prepared to assign your characters to be read out loud by various people in attendance, and assign one person to be the narrator.
We give verbal feedback after each set of pages.
As a writer receives feedback, they are to be silent, even if asked questions. Listen. Take notes. It's not a time to explain, or get defensive. Feedback you consider "wrong" could give you some excellent ideas. Welcome it.
Sometimes attend when your pages aren't being read. That will build your skills in unexpected ways. And help other writers with their scripts.
Please stay for the entire workshop to help each other.
If you are not of the first 4 signing up for pages, you can type "backup pages" as a comment β in case anyone cancels pages.
After you workshop 12 pages (or the entire episode of a multi-cam) β before you bring in the next pages β READ THE ENTIRE SCRIPT to give it a wave of polish.
If you only have a few pages remaining unworkshopped, still bring in 12 pages = the remaining pages + pages before it = re-workshopping some of the previous pages.
Each script is the intellectual property of the writer.
βIf youβre not early, youβre late.β β John Ritter
