Experience a day of art, reflection, and discovery as you explore two of Los Angeles’s most compelling contemporary museums.
Your day begins with three defining experiences: Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms at The Broad, the Geffen Museum’s powerful new MONUMENTS exhibition, and The Broad’s major retrospective Robert Therrien:
This Is a Story. These landmark installations set the tone for an exploration of contemporary art that ranges from the cosmic to the deeply historical.
At The Broad, enter Kusama’s two celebrated Infinity Rooms—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away and Longing for Eternity. Both dissolve the boundaries of physical space through mirrored chambers and shifting fields of light, creating the sensation of floating within a limitless universe.
From there, delve deeper into the museum itself. Housed within its striking honeycomb-clad architecture, The Broad’s collection spans postwar and contemporary masters including Warhol, Koons, Basquiat, Kruger, Walker, and Lichtenstein. Wander the spacious galleries at your own pace, discovering works that shaped—and continue to shape—the story of modern art.
The Broad’s exhibition Robert Therrien: This Is a Story brings together more than 120 works tracing five decades of the artist’s exploration of scale, memory, and the uncanny. Known for transforming everyday objects into monumental, dreamlike forms—such as his famous Under the Table—Therrien invites viewers into a world where domestic spaces become immersive and surreal.
After your visit, enjoy lunch on your own at Grand Central Market, a lively downtown landmark filled with local vendors offering everything from tacos and ramen to pastries and craft coffee. If time permits, you can even take an optional ride on the world's shortest railway, the iconic Angel's Flight funicular, for about $3 round-trip.
Your final stop is the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, home to groundbreaking exhibitions and boundary-pushing installations. Its featured exhibition, MONUMENTS, gathers decommissioned public statues—many formerly Confederate—and places them in dialogue with newly commissioned artworks. By shifting these once-authoritative symbols into the museum context, the show asks visitors to reconsider how history is told, whose narratives dominate, and how public memory can evolve toward greater accountability and repair.
