The Hard Way to the Top: Potato Chip Rock via Lake Poway

The Vibe: Join the crew for San Diego’s most famous photo op! We’re tackling Mount Woodson to get that iconic "hanging off a cliff" shot on Potato Chip Rock.
But wait—we aren't taking the easy paved road. We’re doing the real hike starting from Lake Poway. This route is beautiful, much longer, and significantly steeper. It’s a serious leg-burner with incredible views the whole way up. We’ll conquer the climb, hang out at the top waiting for our photos (great time to chat!), and trek back down.

The Details:

• Difficulty: HARD. It’s long (7.5 miles) and steep (2,100 ft gain). You need good cardio fitness for this one.
• Timing:
• Suggested Start Time: 7:30 AM (Get there earlier to park; the lot fills up). Starting early beats the worst heat on the exposed trail and helps minimize the wait time for the photo at the top.
• Estimated Duration: 4–5 hours total. This accounts for the hike time plus potentially an hour waiting in line for the photo at the summit on a weekend.
• Parking: Lake Poway charges a fee ($10 cash is usually safest) for non-Poway residents on weekends. Carpooling is highly encouraged!
• Post-Hike Plan: We’ll be starving. Optional regroup for tacos/beers nearby after we finish.

⚠️ IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER & DOG INFO: This trail is completely exposed with zero shade. Bring at least 2-3 liters of water and sun protection. While dogs are technically allowed on leash, this hike is very tough on them due to the heat and distance. If it is over 75°F, please leave your pup at home to avoid heat exhaustion. If you do bring them, ensure they are athletic, conditioned for long distances, and you have plenty of extra water and a bowl just for them. Hike at your own risk.
