Design Ethics - Superpower of designers, how we use it will determine whether we are Jedis or the dark power!

About this Event:
SDD Singapore x SDD Berlin - Lunch in Berlin, Drinks in Singapore

This event is an experiment, a prototype, to bring design communities of two thriving cities, Singapore and Berlin together. SDD Singapore and SDD Berlin have collaborated to put this together. We welcome you wholeheartedly to join in this meaningful and consequential discussion on design and design ethics.

About the topic:
Design Ethics - Superpower of Designers

Increasingly design and designers are becoming central to how we all live, eat, play, love, consume and more. Design is almost like a superpower to influence people's behaviour. With this power comes enormous responsibility to use design in ways that is positive to humanity and sustainability.

If design is central to how we live, ethics in design is central to its use to shape the behaviours of people and influence the world we live in.

Join us in this fireside chat with two formidable design leaders who are designing at scale - in Asia and in Europe.

Speakers:

  1. Randy J Hunt (in his own words)
I'm an American design-centered executive living in Singapore, where I'm Head of Design at Grab. I lead the design organization creating Southeast Asia's super-app

Prior to moving to Asia, I spent all of my adult life in New York City, a place that sits strongly in my heart.

For more than fifteen years I've designed and built multi-sided marketplaces: First a designer-made marketplace named Supermarket (now defunct) that I co-founded, then Etsy, followed by Artsy, and now Grab. The nature of that design has morphed over time. What began as the craft of creating easy-to-use and attractive online shopping, selling, and communication software evolved to be rooted in creating long-term value through design contributions that benefit and strengthen an entire enterprise.

I've given dozens of interviews over the years and served on juries for design awards, arts awards, and scholarships, which can be seen in the archive.

I authored a book titled Product Design for the Web that was published by New Riders in 2013. It is currently out of print. You can find e-book versions and copies from independent book sellers through Amazon and other retailers.

Prior to that, I founded and directed a design studio—Citizen Scholar Inc.—that worked with clients in education, environment, arts, and social good.

About Grab (Randy is Head of Design at Grab):

  1. Clive K. Lavery
Clive is a UX Person and Full-Stack Human Being with more than 10 years of experience helping leading digital agencies and in-house teams to make their users and clients happy.

He is currently working as an Experience Design Lead for Moccu.

Based in Berlin, Clive is a proud part of the Adobe XDI team and an active member of the European UX scene where he revived the local UX Book Club, co-organised UXcamp Europe and mentored students for Career Foundry.

Apart from this he loves exploring the impact of Voice and Sound Design on UX and thinking about how to use his skills for Social Good.

As one of those late "Daddies that UX" to a 1-month old baby boy the notion that designers can use their professional skills to become better "Parents that UX" gets him particularly excited.
