Tour: Bixby/Bolker Suburban Homestead

Details

The Bixby/Bolker Homestead is a 1+ acre parcel with an 1890s farm house where Peter and Jessica moved in 1997. The homestead includes several decorative garden spaces, two production garden areas, several dozen fruit trees and some small fruits, a chicken enclosure, utility sheds and high tunnels for chicken residence, winter vegetable production, and wood storage.

Here's some of what you will see:
Free standing and trellised orchard trees.
Kiwi berries
Red currants
Laying hens
Asparagus and Rhubarb bed
Drip irrigation
Row cover
Unheated winter production high tunnel
Nursery bed for grafted apples

Peter and Jessica started gardening together in Bloomington, IN. When they moved to NH and bought property here, early priorities included starting perennial crops like asparagus and rhubarb and planting fruit trees. Plantings and infrastructure have been gradually changing over the years as they have gained experience and priorities have evolved. They use organic and sustainable techniques and are pleased (mostly) that the property is a haven for wildlife even in a fairly residential neighborhood.

COST: sliding scale of $10-30, payable at the event. No one turned away if unable to pay. Please bring cash or check!
