Miyawaki (and other) Miniforests Workshop
Details
The Miyawaki (mee-ah-WOK-ee) miniforest was developed by Akira Miyawaki as a method of planting to tackle environmental degradation and restore native forests in urban and industrial areas. His approach aimed to accelerate forest growth, enhance biodiversity, and create resilient ecosystems. By densely planting native species and improving soil conditions, Miyawaki mini-forests grow much faster than conventional reforestation efforts, often maturing in 10 to 20 years instead of 100. These forests help combat urban heat islands, improve air quality and provide green spaces for communities. The method has been widely adopted across the world, from Japan to India, Brazil, and already hundreds in the US.
Mark will also discuss other methods that can achieve similar goals: food forests, community gardens, multi-use solar fields, and pollinator gardens/pathways/contiguous habitat.
Please join Mark Haubner for this introductory, interactive discussion about how you can bring one of these life-affirming pocket forests to your community.
