Nature-based Solutions are examples of planetary health mechanisms derived from millions of years of experience. Whether regeneration of soil or waterways, the ‘answers’ are available to us if we just learn to watch and listen to the biosphere of which we are an integrated part.

Slow the Flow... Our outmoded concepts of storm water show our attitude toward water being part of the larger linear consumption model - we simply ‘throw it away.’ By redirecting runoff, we can keep rainwater close to the land on which it fell. For each 1 inch of rain, 20,000 gallons can be managed by an acre of healthy soil. We can use a dozen Nature-based Solutions to reduce the costs and trouble of ‘managing’ stormwater, and by coupling these practices with changes in building design, we can achieve healthier soils. These are profound and impactful changes made at the local and bioregional levels. You will discover a dozen ways to Slow the Flow, and we will assess the social, economic and environmental applications for the greatest impact for your own situation.

Nature Cools... Plants are cool, plants cool, we are cooler with plants; but it is the water which flows from soil to plant to air which functions like the sweat on our skin. Less plants, more buildings, more pavement, more heat. Learn basics of Nature-based architecture and landscaping which reduce the need for energy-intensive building and temperature manipulation. Examples include native planting, rainwater reuse, and the Miyawaki miniforest, all applicable in our own yard, our neighborhoods, our housing developments and far beyond.
