Human beings are remarkably adaptive creatures. We adapt to our families, our friendships, our workplaces, our cultures, and the countless circumstances that shape our lives. But adaptation alone does not tell us whether we are becoming wiser, healthier, freer, or more capable of living well.

Some forms of change seem like genuine growth. Others seem more like successful adaptations to unhealthy circumstances. Yet the difference is not always obvious. A person can become highly effective within a particular environment while still losing touch with something important.

For this session of the Seattle Applied Wisdom Lab, we'll explore a fundamental question: How do we distinguish growth from mere adaptation?

Drawing on philosophy, psychology, and everyday experience, we'll examine competing ways of understanding human development. Is growth simply a matter of adapting successfully to our circumstances? Or does it require some deeper standard by which our development can be judged?

Topics may include:

  • Character and value formation
  • Adaptation, flourishing, and human development
  • Aristotle's conception of virtue and practical wisdom
  • The relationship between truth, reality, and personal growth
  • Authenticity and self-transformation
  • Psychological models of security and maturity
  • Whether there are standards of growth beyond social conformity and personal preference

As always, the discussion will be grounded in a short essay distributed in advance, followed by a structured group conversation focused on philosophical reflection and lived experience.

The advance reading will take approximately 20 minutes.

Please RSVP only if you genuinely expect to attend and participate in the discussion.

Format

  • This will be a structured, discussion-based session.
  • The goal is not to debate or give long speeches, but to think carefully together about the ideas and how they show up in real life.
  • We’ll begin with brief introductions, then move through a series of guided discussion blocks.
