Senu was the first dancer to teach Kalbeliya dance to foreigners over 20 years ago.

Kalbeliya are know to originate from the gateway of the Romany Trail. They are still to this day referring to themselves as “Gypsies”. They are nomadic people, travelers. For years they have roamed Rajasthan setting up their camps in various places. Now, many established artists have homes in the city and their village home.

Kalbeliya were know as Snake Charmers. They would catch snakes from peoples homes and cure people from snake bites. When this became outlawed, they shifted into a matriarchal community when the women took up dance as a means to make a living. The snake like movements are mesmerizing and sometimes energetic.
