“He who has no vision for the small things also blinds himself to the greater design.”
(Confucius, 551 – 479 B.C.)

In this game, you are a Chinese prince, seeking to maximize the prosperity and prestige of your province in the ancient China. To assist in these endeavors, the princes must call upon the diverse talents of their courtiers, from scholars and
monks to warriors and craftsmen. These loyal subjects will lend their expertise to the struggle to shield their rulers from the often disastrous consequences of the myriad untoward events that plague the populace from month to month. Be it drought, contagion or Mongol invasion,
only foresight and planning will spare the princes and their subjects from
these fates. The better a prince can manage his province and withstand the seemingly unending onslaught of hazardous events, the more honor and prosperity he will have to show for it in the end.

In the Year of the Dragon is an Action Drafting, Hand Management game. Players take on the role of Chinese rulers around the year 1000. The game plays out in twelve rounds, with each round representing one month in a year that seems to go from bad to worse, but make sure you have enough money to offer a tribute to the Emperor.
Every player has a set of "person" cards. Each round, you choose one action to help you prepare for the months ahead. Then you play one person card, recruiting that person and placing him into one of your palaces. Each person brings different skills and abilities to help you ride out the year. At the end of each round, that month's event is triggered, which may cost you some of your workers, some money, or give you points.
Careful planning is the key to surviving "the year of the dragon," but survival alone may not win you the game.
New players are welcome, and the host is happy to teach if you haven't played before.

2 - 5 players
60 - 120 minutes expected play time, depending on turnout and player familiarity.

A few important details:

  • The event space is in the basement and there are only stairs (no elevator) if you have mobility issues keep this in mind.
  • This event is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM PLEASE be on time! If you would like to bring a guest please message me.
  • It's Cap/First Hill/Seattle U, so parking can be a challenge. Please factor traffic & parking into your commute and if you will be late post in messages or the Discord. Anchorhead is only a few blocks from the First Hill Streetcar (Broadway & Pike/Pine or Broadway & Marion) and the #2 and #12 bus lines.
  • If you need to cancel please do so as soon as you know. People on the waitlist and playing that day will appreciate it! Signing up for this event means other people are counting on you to attend; board games have both a minimum and a maximum player count, so with limited seats available, I want to be sure that those seats actually have people in them. Last-minute cancellations (less than 24 hours), no-shows, and late arrivals (30+ minutes) without good reason will be marked as no-show for the event and will be automatically moved to the waitlist if one forms for any and all future events they join which are hosted by me and other select hosts!
  • SUPPORT THE VENUE! - Purchasing something isn't a requirement, but it's nice to do since we're using the space. Please support the business if you can!
  • I open signups on Wednesday, 3 days before pressing the "announce" button here on Meetup; if you want to have the opportunity to claim a seat early, you can join the SBG Discord, where I'll post to let users there know as soon as RSVPs open as well as updates and posting polls for future meetups!
