The year is 1897. The colonial era is over. Puerto Rico is finding its place in the modern world. You want to find your
place in the modern world, too—and you are ready to vie with rival farmers to do it. You compete for the best workers
to produce goods made from Puerto Rico’s most valuable resources. As you fight to sell your goods for the highest
profit, you fuel a vibrant urban infrastucture and grow your reputation. Will you amass the prestige you crave and
become the wealthiest farmer in the land?

Puerto Rico: 1897, uses Economic, Action Drafting, End Game Bonuses, & Progressive Variable Phase Order. Players assume the roles of colonial plantation owners on the island of Puerto Rico. The aim of the game is to amass victory points by shipping goods to Europe & by constructing buildings.
Each player uses a separate small board with spaces for city buildings, plantations, and resources. Shared between the players are three ships, a trading house, and a supply of resources and doubloons. The resource cycle of the game is that players grow crops which they exchange for points or doubloons. Doubloons can then be used to buy buildings, which allow players to produce more crops or give them other abilities. Buildings and plantations do not work unless they are occupied by workers.
During each round, players take turns selecting a role card from those on the table (such as "Trader" or "Builder"). When a role is chosen, every player gets to take the action appropriate to that role. The player that selected the role also receives a small privilege for doing so while unused roles gain a doubloon bonus. This encourages players to make use of all the roles throughout a typical course of a game.
Puerto Rico uses a variable phase order mechanism in which a "governor" token is passed clockwise to the next player at the conclusion of a turn and they begin the round by choosing a role and taking the first action.
Players earn victory points for owning buildings, for shipping goods, and for manned "large buildings." Victory points are kept secret to require players to consider their options before choosing a role that can end the game.
New players are welcome, and the host is happy to teach if you haven't played before.

A few important details:

  • This event is scheduled to start at Noon PLEASE be on time!
  • It's Cap Hill, so parking can be a challenge. Please factor traffic & parking into your commute and if you will be late post in messages or the Discord. Phoenix Comics & Games is about a block from several bus lines, the First Hill Streetcar (Broadway & Denny), & the Capitol Hill light rail station.
  • If you need to cancel please do so as soon as you know. People on the waitlist and playing that day will appreciate it! Signing up for this event means other people are counting on you to attend; board games have both a minimum and a maximum player count, so with limited seats available, I want to be sure that those seats actually have people in them. Last-minute cancellations (less than 12 hours), no-shows, and late arrivals (15+ minutes) without good reason will be marked as no-shows for the event and will be automatically moved to the waitlist if one forms for any and all future events they join which are hosted by me.
  • SUPPORT THE VENUE! - Purchasing something isn't a requirement, but it's nice to do since we're using the space. Please support the business if you can!
  • I open signups on Wednesday, 3 days before pressing the "announce" button here on Meetup; if you want to have the opportunity to claim a seat early, you can join the SBG Discord, where I'll post to let users there know as soon as RSVPs open as well as updates and posting polls for future meetups!
