Every Move Matters

This event is for highly interactive strategy games—games in which you aren't simply building your own engine or optimizing your own position while everyone else does the same. Your plans depend on what the other players do, and their plans depend on you.
Examples include Samurai, Mexica, Hansa Teutonica, Tigris & Euphrates, El Grande, and Blokus.

These games use very different mechanisms—area control, tile placement, network building, action points, auctions, route building, and positional play—but they have several things in common:

• High player interaction. Blocking, competing for space, contesting majorities, exploiting opportunities created by other players, and sometimes deliberately disrupting their plans are central to play.
• Substantial strategic depth without extremely heavy rules. The challenge comes less from learning a large ruleset than from making good decisions in a constantly changing competitive environment.
• A shared game state. What another player does can fundamentally alter the value of your next move. There is little sense of playing a separate game on your own board.
• Relatively compact playing time. Most can be played in roughly 45–120 minutes, while still offering the kinds of consequential decisions more commonly associated with much longer games.

We'll pick one or two games to play. I'll teach as needed. If you enjoy games where every move matters partly because other people are sitting at the table, this is the event for you.

Important

• Please be on time. Lateness inconveniences everyone.
• Parking is relatively easy; there are no 2-hour limits after 6pm. However, you will probably have to park 2-3 blocks away unless you use pay parking.
• Cancelation. If you need to cancel, please do so as soon as you know. People on the waitlist and playing that day will appreciate it! Signing up for this event means other people are counting on you to attend. No-shows without good reason will be marked as no-show for the event. No-show marks will adversely affect your reputation.
• Support Missing Piece. Purchasing something isn't a requirement, but it's nice to do since we're using the space. Please support the business if you can!
