Catan Scenarios @ The Missing Piece
Details
Catan is the legendary board game that introduced millions to modern Eurogames, reshaping the world of tabletop gaming. Designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in 1995, Catan was a revolutionary shift from luck-driven roll-and-move games to a deeply strategic yet accessible experience—one that emphasizes trade, resource management, and dynamic player interaction.
Scenarios
We'll play one of the following:
- Heading for New Shores: Sail from the main island to settle neighboring islands and earn special victory points for first-time settlement.
- The Four Islands: Compete across four distinct island landmasses separated by the sea.
- The Fog Islands: Unveil hidden or "fog" hexes as your ships explore uncharted ocean regions.
- Through the Desert: Navigate and cross desert and sea regions to reach target lands.\
- The New World: Construct a randomized map using ocean and land hexes.
Important: I prefer to play with the Deck of Dice or similar to reduce the impact of luck.
I'll teach the game if needed. To learn yourself, watch Rodney Smith's How to Play Catan or use the BGG Catan resources.
Background & Details
Set on the fictional island of Catan, players take on the role of settlers competing to build the most prosperous colony. The modular hex-based board ensures that no two games are the same, and players must carefully expand their networks of settlements, roads, and cities while leveraging the island’s five key resources: wood, brick, wheat, sheep, and ore.
Core Gameplay
- Resource Generation – Each turn, a dice roll determines which hexes produce resources for adjacent settlements and cities.
- Trading & Negotiation – Since no player can produce everything they need, trading with opponents (or the bank) is essential to success.
- Building & Expansion – Players use resources to construct roads, settlements, and cities while competing for prime locations and key bonuses.
- The Robber – A lurking threat that can block production and steal resources, adding an element of tension and strategy.
- Victory Points & Development – Players earn points for expanding their settlements, achieving key milestones, and building valuable developments such as knights and special bonus cards.
