SSO: Brahms and Elgar, 11/09
Details
Dear Classical Music Lovers,
If you are able, please join us for a performance by the Seattle Symphony, conductor Mark Wigglesworth, and internationally renowned pianist and author Stephen Hough! We will plan to meet up before the performance and during intermission.
The program starts of with Brahms's second piano concerto, which is one of the gems of both the orchestral and piano repertoire. The work is completely symphonic in scale, with the piano being integrated directly into the texture of the orchestra. It took Brahms 20 years after the disastrous reception of his first piano concerto before he felt comfortable to try again with this work - and what a worthwhile wait.
The other work on the program is underappreciated in the US. The second Elgar Symphony was written in the midst of change in Elgar's life. The world was changing around him: a few of his friends died during the period this was written, King Edward the VII (to whom the work is dedicated) also died ushering in a changing of an era, and lastly Elgar fell in love melancholic love. Wistful permeates the score with flashes of modernity. It is easily one of Elgar's finest works.
