May I Unlock Your IPhone?

Over the years we have all heard that data is the “new oil”. Everyone wants to get their hands on data- your data, my data, everyone’s data. Collecting your preferences and uploading your life to the cloud is a good thing right? The more we know the better. Better ways to serve you, better ways to get the right products in front of you, better ways to give you what you didn’t even know you wanted.

A piece from the New York Times Magazine in 2012 kicked-off the firestorm of conversation on data privacy that continues today. The piece described how Target used transactional data to target expectant mothers for marketing campaigns: How Companies Learn Your Secrets (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/magazine/shopping-habits.html). Where do we draw the line on privacy versus promotion? Is it a good thing that companies can target our behavior online, and predict what we want, before we even want it.

That story was in 2012, today in 2016, 2 weeks ago, a new headline describe how Apple CEO Tim Cook refused the FBI’s request to unlock an iPhone (http://techcrunch.com/2016/02/17/why-apple-is-fighting-not-to-unlock-iphones-for-the-government/).

Where does the conversation end when it comes to collecting your data? When are analysts accountable for how their analyses are used? Join us as Veronica Calvillo, Business & Marketing Analyst at Yesler, discusses these questions and others as they relate to the ethics of data collection.
