Twenty years ago, I had been a creator or a co-creator of component-based development, use cases, Rational Unified Process (RUP), Unified Modeling Language (UML) and more.
People saw me as a guru in the software industry. Life was a “dance on roses”! However, I also felt that having gurus in a science-based industry, social and technical sciences, was unworthy of our discipline. I felt it was nothing less than “crazy”. Over the years I have identified many other “crazy things”, such as having a methods war, and the absence of a common ground for methods. Instead of attempting to create a better method, I have together with hundreds of other experts focused on recognizing and addressing the weakness in how we work with methods.
In this talk, I will give a brief history of methods and frameworks and the “crazy things” we have lived with for 50+ years and still live with. However, there is now a change in the coming. The international standard Essence and its use cases addresses this situation elegantly. How? That is the key learning objective of this talk. # Bio

Dr. Ivar Jacobson is a father of components and component architecture - work that was adopted by Ericsson and resulted in the greatest commercial success story ever in the history of Sweden, and it still is. He is the father of use cases and Objectory, which, after the acquisition of Rational Software in 1995, resulted in the Rational Unified Process, a widely adopted method. He is also one of the three original developers of the Unified Modelling Language. But all this is history. Ivar founded his current company, Ivar Jacobson International, which since 2004 has been focused on using methods and tools in a smart, super light, and agile way. This work resulted in Ivar becoming a founder and a leader of a worldwide network, SEMAT (Software Engineering Method and Theory), which has the mission to revolutionize software development based on a kernel of software engineering. The kernel has been realized as a formal OMG standard called Essence.
