Join me for a spectacular alpine adventure on the Heliotrope Ridge Trail! This challenging but incredibly rewarding hike takes us through old-growth forests and across glacial creeks to the foot of the mighty Mt. Baker and its stunning Coleman Glacier. Expect wildflowers, breathtaking up-close views of the mountain, and the glacier.
π Hike Details
- Trailhead: Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead (Forest Road 39)
- Distance: ~5.5 miles roundtrip (to the main viewpoint)
- Elevation Gain: ~1,700 ft
- Highest Elevation: ~4,900 ft
- Difficulty: Challenging (steep sections, rocky terrain, and potentially difficult creek crossings)

- Important Note: The final stretch of Forest Road 39 is rough with potholes. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended.
- Carpooling:
- Meet at: Green Lake Park & Ride (NE 65th St & I-5)
- Fuel Reimbursement: Cash/Venmo/Zelle preferred. $25 for three riders, $35 for two riders, and $45 for one rider.

9:15 AM β Arrive at Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead
9:30 AM β Begin hike
11:30 PM β Lunch and enjoy the views at the ridge (approx. 45 mins)
2:30 PM β Back to trailhead
5:00 PM β Return to Green Lake P&R (Later if stopping for dinner on the way)
π What to Bring
- Essentials: Plenty of water (2L+ recommended), high-energy snacks, lunch
- Footwear: Hiking shoes with good traction are essential. For the creek crossings, bring water shoes or sandals (to change into) and a quick-dry towel.
- Clothing: Layers (weather can change rapidly), sun protection
- Safety & Extras: The 10 Essentials, trekking poles (highly recommended for creek crossings and descent)
