1843 Original Fort Nisqually Site Tour, Free

Details
THE IDENTICAL TOUR IS ALSO OFFERED AT 1PM.
Fort Nisqually was founded in 1833 by the Hudson's Bay Company and is the oldest non-indigenous settlement on Puget's Sound. There is a famous replica of Ft. Nisqually at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. But the actual site of the Fort was at the present location of Dupont, WA.
Once a year the Dupont Historical Society opens the original Ft. Nisqually site in Dupont for a free guided tour lead by Ft. Nisqually expert Carol Estep and Ft. Nisqually expert and author Steve Anderson. The importance of Ft. Nisqually to the history of Puget Sound cannot be underestimated. Chief Seattle visited often. Ft. Nisqually's doctor, and later factor, Dr. Tolmie is honored via place names and flora names throughout Puget's Sound. Tolmie was also the first non-indigenous person to attempt to climb Mt. Rainier.
Let's meet at the Dupont City Hall parking lot at 9:50 AM. After the site tour we may take a walk down the Seguallitchew Creek trail to visit several historical markers from the Ft. Nisqually era. For those who want to, we will also visit the Ft. Nesqually replica at Pt. Defiance on the way home ($19 ticket required).
